TSH levels-understand your TSH levels, and monitor your thyroid gland

Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is a peptide hormone that is secreted by the pituitary gland, which is located at the foot of the brain. Its main function is to stimulate the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine, or T4 or T3. TSH is also responsible for maintaining levels of thyroid hormones in the body.

TSH levels in the blood may be an indicator of performance of the thyroid gland. If there is a problem with the thyroid gland, it will reflect the TSH levels in the body. Thus in order to determine a basic thyroid disease, the doctor usually orders TSH blood.

There is a normal range TSH, which is evidence of active or healthy thyroid, but any deviation from the normal range is a sign of under-active or thyroid disorders. TSH normal range is 0.4-LM 4.0 U/l. any other value that are above or below the normal range indicates that you have a thyroid problem.

High levels of TSH

If the blood test results indicate high levels of TSH, this indicates that your thyroid gland doesn't produce enough thyroid hormones, body. This condition is called hypothyroidism. When this happens, the pituitary gland then releases the hormones to stimulate more TSH to produce more thyroid hormones of the thyroid gland.

High levels of TSH is an important indicator of malfunctioning of the thyroid gland. It also means that there may be problems with pituitary gland. Surgery, medication and pituitary gland tumor of other factors that may cause high levels of TSH in the body.

Low levels of TSH

TSH low blood result implies that you have a hyperactive thyroid, which often produces too much thyroid hormone. This condition is called hyperthyroidism. Low TSH is also an indicator of problems with pituitary gland.
